Orlando is a golf town. Between the courses, the academies, and year-round playable weather, it makes sense that so many homeowners want a green of their own. Our backyard putting greens give you tour-quality roll at home — a real practice surface with fringe, chipping areas, and cups, not a flat patch of carpet.

We design and build custom greens for homes across the Orlando area, from Lake Nona to Windermere and Winter Garden to Oviedo. Every green is shaped for true roll, built on a proper base, and finished with turf made for putting — so your practice actually transfers to the course.

What a Backyard Putting Green Includes

A real green is a system, not a single product:

Why Orlando Golfers Build Greens at Home

Practice that counts. Fifteen minutes of putting before work does more for your score than a monthly range session. A home green removes every excuse.

Florida weather. Natural-grass greens in Orlando need constant mowing, watering, and disease treatment in our humidity. A synthetic green needs brushing, not a grounds crew.

Kids and family. A green is the rare practice tool the whole family uses. Kids who would never sit through a lesson will putt for an hour in the backyard.

Home value and fun. In golf-heavy neighborhoods like Lake Nona, Windermere, and Celebration, a well-built green is a standout feature — and a great reason for friends to come over.

How the Build Works, Step by Step

Step 1: Design

We walk your yard and design the green around your space, sun, and drainage — size, shape, break direction, cup count, and where the fringe and chipping areas go. You approve the design before we dig.

Step 2: Excavation and base shaping

We excavate, then build and compact the rock base into the designed contours. This is where the breaks come from — it has to be shaped before turf ever touches it.

Step 3: Cups and drainage

Cup sleeves are set in concrete at the designed spots. Drainage is built in so Orlando downpours sheet off and through without leaving the green soggy.

Step 4: Fringe and putting surface

Fringe turf goes down first, then the putting surface is laid, cut, and seamed. Seams on a green get extra attention — a lifted seam ruins roll.

Step 5: Infill, speed tuning, and finishing

We infill to your target speed, brush the surface, and test-roll putts from every cup. Most greens take three to five days.

What It Costs in Orlando

Backyard putting greens typically run $15 to $25 per square foot, installed. A 400-square-foot green with fringe usually lands between $6,000 and $10,000. Larger greens with chipping areas and multiple tiers run higher.

Design complexity, access, drainage needs, and the putting surface grade move the price. Honest note: every yard is different — these are starting ranges, and the written quote after your design consult is the real number.

What a Bad Green Looks Like

Keeping It Honest: The Downsides

A green costs more per foot than a regular lawn, and it still needs care — brushing to keep speed consistent and occasional infill top-ups. In direct sun it gets warm underfoot, so plan your practice for morning or evening in summer. And be honest about size: a tiny green with no room to chip from is still fun, but a little extra space makes it far more useful.

Designing a Green for Your Game

The best home greens are designed around how you actually practice. Tell us your weakness and we will build for it:

Most yards fit a green that covers two or three of these. During the design visit we will sketch what your space allows and be straight about trade-offs.

What "Tour-Quality" Really Means

The phrase gets thrown around a lot, so here is what it actually means in a backyard: a surface that rolls true (no hops or wobbles), speed you can tune with infill and brushing, and contours that make you read greens instead of just stroking putts. It does not mean your backyard matches Augusta — it means your practice transfers to real courses.

Two things make or break it. First, the base contours — breaks are shaped in rock before turf goes down, and they cannot be fixed later. Second, the putting surface turf itself — real green-grade turf, not landscape turf cut short. Ask any builder what turf line they use and look it up. If they cannot name it, walk away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a synthetic green really putt like a real green?

A well-built synthetic green rolls true and can be tuned for speed, which is what matters for practice. It will not perfectly match the greens at your club — nothing does — but for stroke, alignment, and distance control, it is excellent practice.

How much space do I need for a backyard green?

Most home greens are 300 to 800 square feet. You can build smaller, but give yourself room to putt from different angles and, if possible, space to chip from. We will tell you honestly if your yard is too small for what you want.

How do I maintain a putting green?

Brush it regularly to keep the speed consistent, blow off leaves and debris, and top up infill once a year or so. No mowing, no watering, no chemicals. We can include a maintenance visit in your plan.

Will it drain in Orlando's heavy rain?

Yes. The base is built to drain and the turf backing is porous, so storms clear quickly. The green should be playable again within an hour or two of a downpour.

Can my dog use the putting green?

Dogs and putting surfaces do not mix well — claws can scuff the short fibers and urine spots show. If the dog shares the yard, we can design a separate pet turf area alongside the green.
